Where Sweeps Casinos Are Legal
Sweeps play is available across most of the country. Four states are the exception, and here is where things stand.
The Short Answer
Sweepstakes casinos operate lawfully in the large majority of US states. Four are currently off the table: Washington, Nevada and Idaho have blocked sweeps play for years, and California joined them in January 2026 when AB 831 took effect. If you live anywhere else, you are almost certainly clear to play.
Why Those Four Are Different
Washington takes the strictest line on online gaming in the country and its statutes are broad enough to catch the promotional model. Nevada protects its licensed commercial casino industry and treats sweeps operators as unlicensed competition. Idaho applies a similarly wide reading of its gambling definitions. California is the newest addition, and AB 831 addressed dual-currency sweepstakes gaming directly rather than catching it incidentally.
Age Requirements
The floor is 18 at most operators, but a number set it at 21, and in some states the higher figure applies regardless of operator preference. Every review on this site notes the requirement for that brand. Age verification happens during identity checks, so an inaccurate date of birth at signup will surface later and can cost you a redemption.
This Landscape Moves
State legislatures have been increasingly active on this subject through 2026, with committee activity in several states beyond the four already closed. We re-check availability against operator terms every month and flag changes on the individual review pages. Even so, the operator terms are the authoritative source at the moment you sign up, and worth thirty seconds of your time.
What Happens If You Travel
Eligibility follows your physical location, not your billing address. Operators use geolocation, so logging in from a blocked state will restrict play even on an account opened elsewhere. If you move permanently to one of the four, expect to be able to withdraw an existing balance but not to continue playing.
